AI Foundations

AI Ownership: The Trend the SaaS Wave Didn't See Coming

The short version

  • Your foundation should be yours, not your employer's. Enterprise models vary and careers change, but your setup, prompt library, and automations can't follow you out the door.
  • Treat work AI (Copilot, Gemini) as ships in your fleet. Claude Pro on your own account is the flagship, where you build tone, skills, and strategies that outlast any platform.
  • You can set up real ownership in about 30 minutes: your own account, two files (claude.md and aboutme.md), skills and connectors, the right working modes, and ROCTI, matching the model to the task.

Personal AI ownership is the foundation of every strategy I build. No matter the goal, it's the key to your personal AI transformation.

Enterprise models can vary. Careers change. Your foundation shouldn't.

Your work account is incredible, and you should use every token to enhance your skills and experience. But here's the brutal fact: if you transition tomorrow or in the next five years, your setup, prompt library, and automation cannot come with you. Owning your own foundation is key to establishing antifragile credibility.

At work, you might run Copilot or Gemini. Think of those as ships in your fleet. Claude Pro (Desktop) is the flagship, where you build your personal brand (tone and preference), exercise your skills, and output strategies that outlast any platform.

AI ownership in 30 minutes

Five steps. The first one is the hardest, and I've got the next four.

1

Get your own account, not the one your job gave you

Your own. Claude Pro is $20 a month and the prime pick for your flagship: a compounding model stack, personalized working memory, and clear data security. Go to claude.ai/download to install. That first step is the hardest part.

2

Set up two key files once

Your claude.md is your instruction manual for how you like to work; your aboutme.md is your brand strategy, who you are and where you're going. Don't build them by hand. Download my setup skill, attach it to the Claude Cowork chat, and ask for it to be made into a skill. Then start the next chat with /claude-foundation, and Claude will interview you and create both.

3

Set up your account

In Customize, add Skills to save a playbook Claude repeats perfectly, and connectors that plug your foundation into your apps. Don't see the app you need? MCP is the universal adapter to everything else.

4

Match the working mode to the job

Code to run your numbers. Design for slides and wireframes. Dispatch to schedule repeat work and reminders. Artifacts for a live page that refreshes from your data.

5

ROCTI: Return on Claude Token Investment

Match the model to the task so you never overpay or run out. Toggle the Haiku model for quick lookups. Sonnet for everyday building. Opus for strategy and planning. Save Fable 5 for when you've got your feet wet and are ready to party!

You don't need to master it all today, but the win for today is knowing that ownership is within reach and essential to your long-term success.

The final note

The professionals who win with AI won't be the ones with the best tool at work. They'll be the ones who own their skills and their AI strategy.

This is the work I do.

The full walkthrough on my site is tap-through: download my skill, call /claude-foundation in the chat, and you'll get an AI coach that builds your optimized setup while you lead. So what's your setup? I'd love to hear how you're thinking about ownership in the era of AI.

Questions people ask about this

Straight answers, in case you skimmed.

Why get your own AI account instead of using your employer's?

Because your work setup, prompt library, and automations can't come with you when you change jobs. Enterprise models vary and careers change, so owning your own foundation is what gives you antifragile credibility that outlasts any platform.

What are claude.md and aboutme.md?

They're two plain markdown files that anchor your personal AI. claude.md is your instruction manual for how you like to work; aboutme.md is your brand strategy, who you are and where you're going. You can build both by interview using the setup skill and the /claude-foundation flow, instead of writing them by hand.

What is ROCTI?

Return on Claude Token Investment: matching the model to the task so you never overpay or run out. Use Haiku for quick lookups, Sonnet for everyday building, Opus for strategy and planning, and Fable 5 once you've got your feet wet.

Notes

  1. claude.md and aboutme.md are ordinary markdown files. Prices and features (for example Claude Pro at $20 a month) are current as of publication and can change.
